When Mr Tang was called to the bar in 1963, it marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that would intertwine law, leadership and nation-building.

Mr Tang began his practice at Rodyk & Davidson - today known as Dentons Rodyk - one of Singapore’s oldest and most established law firms. Since those early days, his dedication to mastering his craft was evident, as was the integrity with which he approached every brief.

Answering the nation’s call

After Singapore’s independence, Mr Tang took his commitment to justice and order beyond the courtroom. Between 1966 and 1988, he served as Member of Parliament for Choa Chu Kang, where he is still fondly remembered by the township’s residents.

He also had full-time appointments as Parliamentary Secretary and later Minister of State for the Finance Ministry. And from 1972 to 1981, he held the office of Deputy Speaker of Parliament. In every role, he sought to build a fair, principled and forward-looking nation - where the law formed the foundation for trust and progress.

Integrity above all

On returning to private practice, Mr Tang continued to shape the profession from within. For more than a decade he was a chairman of the Singapore Law Society’s Disciplinary Committee - a role that demanded both judgment and moral clarity.

His very first case as Chairman involved a lawyer who had taken on a matter outside his expertise, resulting in extensive financial losses for his client. It reaffirmed Mr Tang’s lifelong conviction that professionalism and integrity are not just legal principles, but the very bedrock of public confidence in the profession he loves.

Recognition for a lifetime of principle

In 2011, Mr Tang received the CC Tan Award, one of the Singapore Law Society’s most prestigious honours. It recognises lawyers who embody honesty, fair play, courtesy and personal integrity - virtues that Mr Tang has upheld unfailingly throughout his career.

A trusted voice across sectors

Mr Tang’s counsel remains highly sought after. Over the years, he has served on numerous corporate boards, public committees and advisory panels - sharing his unique blend of legal insight, strategic foresight and moral authority. He has also successfully brought together stakeholders from across both the legal and public spheres, where his presence commands respect - and more importantly, trust.

Lessons from the sea

Outside the office, Mr Tang finds peace on the water. A passionate sailor, he once captained a six-metre vessel named Nauticat, which has taken part in annual regattas held as far away as Phuket. He likens sailing to the practice of law: largely calm and measured, yet demanding skill and preparation in constant readiness against the unexpected.

A life in law, a legacy of service

Across seven decades, Mr Tang has embodied the highest ideals of our profession - wisdom grounded in experience, integrity that never wavers, and service beyond the courtroom. His journey reflects not just personal accomplishment, but a steadfast belief that law exists to build a just society and a stronger nation.
