While most lawyers specialise in either contentious or non-contentious matters, Richard is one of a rare breed who are equally fluent in both. Matched with his deep mastery of companies law and extensive understanding of corporate ecosystems, it gives him a clear view of the entire field in every legal matter - anticipating issues before they arise, designing safeguards that withstand pressure, and if things escalate, deploying them to decisive effect in litigation.

The grand strategist at work

Planning and foresight define Richard’s approach to every brief.

In non-contentious work, he drafts documents with an eye on future contingencies - embedding protective clauses and strategic safeguards that quietly tilt any future disputes in his clients’ favour.

If conflicts do arise, these very provisions become his advantage, allowing him to outmanoeuvre opponents in the courtroom.

Even without these built-in defences, Richard remains a formidable litigator. Years of drafting and dissecting court documents have given him an encyclopaedic grasp of procedural and statutory nuances - including obscure provisions of law that he deftly leverages to secure the upper hand in complex disputes.

Richard’s fusion of skills ensures no loss of knowledge or momentum if a matter shifts from contract to conflict. A case that illustrates this was his work for a venture capitalist investing in a Vietnamese start-up through a Singapore holding company. Richard drafted the incorporation and investment documents that brought the venture to life. When the Vietnamese partners were found to have siphoned resources to incubate and launch a separate hundred-million-dollar enterprise, his knowledge of directors’ duties and start-up financing proved decisive. It secured his client’s rights over the new venture and restored significant value to the Singapore investors.

Master of the corporate life-cycle

As an expert in companies law and a registered company secretary, Richard can support clients at every stage of their corporate journey - from incorporation to winding-up. At each step, he is both architect and protector - drafting agreements and charters; advising on governance and in disputes; always steering clients clear of pitfalls and positioning them for long-term success.

Grounded in family and service

Richard’s office is filled with his children’s artwork - messy, colourful, joyous. They remind him daily that the law is, ultimately, about shaping a world that is fair and just for the next generation. “Every choice I make has to stand up to the test of whether I’d be proud to explain it to my children one day,” he says.

In this same pursuit of a better world, he also volunteers at his neighbourhood legal clinic, offering counsel to residents who might otherwise go without. The stories he encounters during these sessions are often humbling, reinforcing his belief that success and privilege come with an obligation to give back.

More than just a lawyer

Many of Richard’s clients count him among their most trusted advisors. When the stakes are high, they invariably turn to him to find a way through. His depth of knowledge, unerring foresight, and strategic precision give them confidence that no matter how complex the challenge, they are in capable hands.
